SUMMARY:Panel: International students and epistemic or knowledge production crises
DESCRIPTION:Register here  \nThis panel considers the active positioning of international students in epistemic production\, including their engagement within colonial knowledge hierarchies. This is set against a backdrop of challenging ‘post-truth’ environments where information is mediated through multiple social media spaces and often subject to multiple propaganda efforts or politicizations. It considers how international students can recognise and contribute to what is true\, what is a fact\, and engage with epistemic uncertainty in their lives and studies. \nLed by Ramzi Merabet\, with presentations by:\nChristie Young Smith\nYaxin Zhang\nYaseen Ali\nEvan Zheng\nAmina Lechkhab\nEkaterina Minaeva \nMore details and speaker abstracts here  \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:Panel: Materialities and material injustices in international students’ mobilities
DESCRIPTION:Register here  \nThis panel examines how inequalities shape the material realities for different groups of international students. Through physical bodies\, spaces\, and material assemblages (technologies\, personal items\, everyday objects\, furniture\, etc.)\, global higher education is mediated and uneven outcomes are created. These material dimensions are often sidelined or overlooked in common explorations of international students’ learning or identities. \nLed by Jenna Mittelmeier\, with speaker contributions by:\nBruna Navarone Santos\nShannon Hutcheson\nDangeni\nEkaterina Minaeva \nMore details and speaker abstracts  \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:The Ones Who Stay Behind: Transitions of Significant Others in International Student Mobility
DESCRIPTION:20 January\, 2026 (Tuesday)\n14:00 PM UK Time (time zone converter)\nOnline Via Zoom (registration required) \nThis session is grounded in a doctoral research examining the multiple and multi-dimensional transitions experienced by Pakistani students and their significant others across three temporal arcs: pre-departure\, during study in the UK\, and post-return. It foregrounds how families and close networks undergo their own concurrent transitions when a student moves abroad; experiences that are frequently overlooked\, unspoken\, and institutionally unrecognised; yet which can critically support\, shape\, or complicate the student’s mobility journey. Drawing on empirical evidence\, the session is situated within Jindal-Snape’s Multiple and Multi-dimensional Transitions framework and engages broader debates on relationality\, networks of care\, and Global South perspectives. The discussion integrates insights from the doctoral thesis alongside professional practice in international education. \nAbout the Speakers: \nFahd Ali Asif is a higher education professional with over sixteen years’ experience in international student recruitment\, admissions\, and partnership development across UK universities and economic development agencies. A former international student\, he now brings an academic lens to these experiences as a doctoral researcher examining the multiple and multi-dimensional transitions of students and their families\, with a particular focus on Pakistani students studying in the UK. His work explores how significant others shape students’ mobility decisions\, experiences\, and identities. This combination of research\, professional practice\, and lived experience allows him to connect empirical evidence with practical insights relevant to researchers\, practitioners\, and students. \nRachel Kimber is Director of Kaplan International Pathways University Placement Service and Alumni Services. With almost three decades of experience across international student recruitment\, university placement\, language testing\, and alumni engagement\, she brings a deep understanding of the institutional and human dimensions of global student mobility. Her recent experience as the parent of an international student preparing to study abroad has offered a further perspective on the often-unseen transitions experienced by those who remain at home. This blend of professional insight and lived experience underpins her commitment to more relational and holistic approaches to international education. \n \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:Beyond the Surface: International Students' Perspectives on Education Agents
DESCRIPTION:24th September 2025 (Wednesday)\n13:00 PM BST – 14:30 PM BST (time zone converter)\nOnline Via Zoom (registration required) \nThis webinar explores research on international students’ perceptions of education agents. Education agents\, who act as intermediaries between students and educational institutions\, play a key role in facilitating international student mobility in the current global landscape. However\, their influence raises a variety of concerns\, including the quality of advice and service provided\, conflicts of interest\, and limited transparency. Research also shows how student experiences with agents are not unilateral in nature. This panel highlights the plurality of experiences\, as well as the agency prospective students may or may not have in relation to their use of agent services. Finally\, the panel examines the methodological limitations associated with assessing agent quality from the student’s perspective\, taking into account information asymmetries and other relevant issues. The panel will conclude with a discussion on the benefits and complexities of concluding the effectiveness of agents based on student views. \n \nAbout the Speaker(s): \nPii-Tuulia Nikula is an Associate Professor at the Eastern Institute of Technology\, where she teaches under- and postgraduate-level courses in research methods and organisational sustainability. Pii-Tuulia’s research explores international education through a critical lens\, including the impact of education agents in facilitating international student mobility. Pii-Tuulia has published several articles on agents and co-edited a book ‘Student Recruitment Agents in International Higher Education’. \nRica Agnes Castaneda (PhD candidate\, Policy Studies/ TMU) is a researcher at the CERC in Migration in Integration at Toronto Metropolitan University. SUMMARY:An Infrastructural Perspective on International Students Navigating the Housing Crisis in Scotland
DESCRIPTION:  \n26th August 2025 (Tuesday)\n14:00 BST (time zone converter)\nOnline via Zoom (registration required) \nThe session focuses on the role of the housing sector as a ‘migration infrastructure’ which mediates the experiences of internationally mobile students. Drawing on survey and interview data collected in Scotland’s two largest cities\, Glasgow and Edinburgh\, the study repositions housing access as a core component of arrival or migration infrastructures\, an area largely overlooked in research on international student mobility. The session frames housing policies\, markets\, and brokers as infrastructures that play a productive (as opposed to mediating) role in students’ mobility trajectories. Empirically\, the study documents how actors such as landlords\, regulatory infrastructures such as national or university housing policies\, non-profit services such as university support services\, and social infrastructures such as migrant networks all mediate access to housing\, often contributing to conditions of precarity. These infrastructures expose less affluent students to discrimination\, exploitative housing practices\, and exclusion\, contributing to the emergence of a ‘two-tier’ housing system that significantly influences the socio-ontological dimensions of student mobility.\n\nAbout the Speaker: Benjamin Mulvey is a Lecturer based in the School of Education at the University of Glasgow. His work is interdisciplinary\, and has been published in journals across the fields of education studies\, sociology\, and geography. These include Higher Education\, Sociology\, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies\, and British Journal of Sociology of Education\, among others. He has published extensively on international student mobility in various non-Western contexts\, and has a broad interest in China’s higher education system. \n  \n \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:Reclaiming EMI: A political-normative response to policy gaps in research and practice with international students
DESCRIPTION:Led by Mustafa Akıncıoğlu \n11 June 2025\n13:00 – 14:00 BST (time zone converter)\nOnline via Zoom \nRegister here  \nSession abstract:\nAs English-medium instruction (EMI) becomes the default for global higher education\, international students increasingly navigate institutional spaces shaped by unexamined EMI policies\, uncritical notions of quality\, and unprofessionalised academic practices. This talk draws on the EMI ProF (Professionalisation Framework)\, a political-normative model rooted in Freirean liberation approach to universities\, to address these systemic deficiencies. \nIt argues that professionalising EMI—through coherent policy\, ethical engagement\, and quality assurance—is imperative for addressing the real experiences of international students. Drawing on recent critiques from the ‘Research with International Students’ scholarly community\, this talk situates EMI universities as both sites of inequality and as spaces of potential transformation. The EMI ProF foregrounds the roles of both students and content-teachers as critical agents in this transformation\, offering a normative framework for decolonising EMI\, resisting research noise\, and centring the politics of voice\, agency\, and justice. \nSpeaker bio: Dr. Mustafa Akıncıoğlu is an Associate Researcher at the University of Oxford\, where he has been actively publishing in the field of English Medium Instruction (EMI) since 2014. He holds a PhD by Existing Published Work\, specializing in EMI higher education policy\, quality\, and professionalisation. As the Founding Convenor of the BALEAP EMI Special Interest Group (EMI SIG)\, Dr. Mustafa has played a pivotal role in advancing research and dialogue in this field. He has contributed to numerous international educational development projects\, successfully undertaking diverse roles. His research interests span EMI\, higher education policy and quality\, professionalisation of higher education\, Critical EMI\, Critical EAP\, learner autonomy\, and Critical Discourse Analysis. \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:ECR Event - Global Insights: Quantitative research with international students
DESCRIPTION:This event is organized by the RIS ECR network and aimed at those who consider themselves early career researchers. \nLed by Dr. Melissa Whatley (William and Mary’s School of Education) \n4 June 2025\n10:00 – 11:00 am EST / 3:00 – 4:00 pm GMT (time zone converter)\nOnline via Webex \nRegister here \nParticipants in this session will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss key issues that arise when conducting quantitative research with international students. The field is generally familiar with common concerns around defining who counts as an international student and the inevitable necessity to group international student research participants into categories in quantitative work. However\, the current political and social climate for research with international students requires us to consider broader\, ethical concerns that can arise when conducting large-scale quantitative research that focuses on or is conducted with international students (or both). The attached article provides some context for these issues and will serve as a foundation for our conversation. You can access the article here: https://doi.org/10.1007/s10734-021-00768-7 \nSpeaker bio: Melissa Whatley is an Assistant Professor of Higher Education in William and Mary’s School of Education. Dr. Whatley’s research applies mixed methods and advanced quantitative approaches to explore policies and practices that diversify both who accesses international education and the outcomes of these opportunities\, especially within the context of U.S. community colleges. She has substantial international experience and shares her research with an international audience on a regular basis. \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:Language as power: The role of linguistic gatekeeping in research with international students
DESCRIPTION:Led by Akanksha Dochania (University of Delhi) \n23 May 2025\n13:00 – 14:00 IST / 8:30 – 9:30 am GMT (time zone converter)\nOnline via Zoom \nRegister here  \nThis webinar critically examines the impact of English-language dominance in global academia on Indian international students\, focusing on the intersecting challenges of caste\, race\, and geographic marginalization from rural areas or Tier 3-4 cities. As English remains the dominant medium of scholarly communication\, Indian students from these backgrounds face amplified barriers in publishing and collaboration due to linguistic gatekeeping. These challenges\, rooted in systemic inequities\, marginalize voices already sidelined by caste hierarchies\, racialized perceptions abroad\, and limited access to quality education in rural or smaller urban centers. Through an intersectional lens\, this webinar explores how these dynamics shape their academic experiences\, highlighting their unique struggles and innovative strategies to resist exclusion. By fostering dialogue among researchers\, educators\, and students\, the session aims to propose equitable solutions tailored to the Indian context\, contributing to a more inclusive global academic landscape. \nSpeaker bio: Akanksha Dochania\, is working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology\, University of Delhi. Her academic journey reflects a commitment to exploring the complexities of human behavior and fostering inclusive environments\, a commitment best exemplified by my doctoral research on implicit prejudice and microaggressions experienced by Afghan students in universities in Delhi. Growing up in different parts of India\, she developed an acute awareness of identity and belonging in diverse socio-cultural settings\, which fueled her pursuit of social psychology. During her PhD at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)\, she has focused on implicit prejudice—unconscious attitudes that subtly shape behavior—and its impact on Afghan students’ academic performance\, mental health\, and sense of belonging. As an Assistant Professor\, she extends this research to broader themes of prejudice\, inclusion\, and resilience\, while mentoring students and fostering critical thinking. Looking ahead\, she aims to deepen her research on implicit prejudice and its broader societal implications\, contributing to evidence-based strategies that dismantle systemic barriers. \n \n\nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n Like this:Like Loading…
