SUMMARY:Reclaiming EMI: A political-normative response to policy gaps in research and practice with international students
DESCRIPTION:Led by Mustafa Akıncıoğlu \n11 June 2025\n13:00 – 14:00 BST (time zone converter)\nOnline via Zoom \nRegister here  \nSession abstract:\nAs English-medium instruction (EMI) becomes the default for global higher education\, international students increasingly navigate institutional spaces shaped by unexamined EMI policies\, uncritical notions of quality\, and unprofessionalised academic practices. This talk draws on the EMI ProF (Professionalisation Framework)\, a political-normative model rooted in Freirean liberation approach to universities\, to address these systemic deficiencies. \nIt argues that professionalising EMI—through coherent policy\, ethical engagement\, and quality assurance—is imperative for addressing the real experiences of international students. Drawing on recent critiques from the ‘Research with International Students’ scholarly community\, this talk situates EMI universities as both sites of inequality and as spaces of potential transformation. The EMI ProF foregrounds the roles of both students and content-teachers as critical agents in this transformation\, offering a normative framework for decolonising EMI\, resisting research noise\, and centring the politics of voice\, agency\, and justice. \nSpeaker bio: Dr. Mustafa Akıncıoğlu is an Associate Researcher at the University of Oxford\, where he has been actively publishing in the field of English Medium Instruction (EMI) since 2014. He holds a PhD by Existing Published Work\, specializing in EMI higher education policy\, quality\, and professionalisation. As the Founding Convenor of the BALEAP EMI Special Interest Group (EMI SIG)\, Dr. Mustafa has played a pivotal role in advancing research and dialogue in this field. He has contributed to numerous international educational development projects\, successfully undertaking diverse roles. The field is generally familiar with common concerns around defining who counts as an international student and the inevitable necessity to group international student research participants into categories in quantitative work. However\, the current political and social climate for research with international students requires us to consider broader\, ethical concerns that can arise when conducting large-scale quantitative research that focuses on or is conducted with international students (or both). As English remains the dominant medium of scholarly communication\, Indian students from these backgrounds face amplified barriers in publishing and collaboration due to linguistic gatekeeping. These challenges\, rooted in systemic inequities\, marginalize voices already sidelined by caste hierarchies\, racialized perceptions abroad\, and limited access to quality education in rural or smaller urban centers. Through an intersectional lens\, this webinar explores how these dynamics shape their academic experiences\, highlighting their unique struggles and innovative strategies to resist exclusion. By fostering dialogue among researchers\, educators\, and students\, the session aims to propose equitable solutions tailored to the Indian context\, contributing to a more inclusive global academic landscape. \nSpeaker bio: Akanksha Dochania\, is working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology\, University of Delhi. Her academic journey reflects a commitment to exploring the complexities of human behavior and fostering inclusive environments\, a commitment best exemplified by my doctoral research on implicit prejudice and microaggressions experienced by Afghan students in universities in Delhi. Growing up in different parts of India\, she developed an acute awareness of identity and belonging in diverse socio-cultural settings\, which fueled her pursuit of social psychology. During her PhD at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)\, she has focused on implicit prejudice—unconscious attitudes that subtly shape behavior—and its impact on Afghan students’ academic performance\, mental health\, and sense of belonging. As an Assistant Professor\, she extends this research to broader themes of prejudice\, inclusion\, and resilience\, while mentoring students and fostering critical thinking. By highlighting the themes of agency\, identity\, and motivation\, the book demonstrates how the students worked to make higher education align with their own goals for learning and growth. \nSpeaker bio: Jason Schneider is an Associate Professor of Writing\, Rhetoric\, & Discourse at DePaul University. His scholarship addresses topics from applied linguistics\, international student mobility\, and rhetorical studies\, appearing in multiple journals across these fields.
