Online Writing Retreats

To write in community with one another

Research with International Students (RIS) organises regular online writing retreats, open to anyone currently writing about work related to this topic and the wider internationalisation of higher education. Online writing retreats are informal spaces for community productivity that are welcome to anyone.

Details coming soon.

What are online writing retreats?

The online writing retreats are intended as a place for those conducting research with international students to find community and solidarity in writing. We meet online via Zoom to informally support each other through collective productivity. Attendees should bring something they are currently writing: a research article, a chapter, a thesis/dissertation, a blog post, etc. The sessions are structured around 45 minutes of productive individual writing, followed by 15-minute breaks. During the breaks, participants can have informal discussions with like-minded colleagues in an informal environment.

Anyone is welcome to join, including scholars at all career levels and based in any location. Attendees are welcome to come and go as they need.

Organisers

The online writing retreats are organised by:

  • Luman Zhou (University of Manchester)
  • Shannon Hutcheson (McGill University)
  • Trang Nguyen (University of Liverpool)
  • Nannan Lu (Nanyang Technological University)

More information about our team is available on the About Us page.

Benefits of attending

We feel that participating in this writing retreat offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Developing a sense of belonging: Being part of this retreat helps create a sense of belonging and understanding within a community of peers.
  • Finding a ‘third space’ to catch up: The retreat serves as a “third place” beyond home and work where you can reduce feelings of isolation and connect with others
  • Boost writing efficiency: The structured writing sessions are designed to enhance your productivity and help you make significant progress on your projects.
  • Making connections and cultivating future seeds: Build lasting friendships and professional connections with fellow researchers, fostering a collaborative network of future social scientists.

We look forward to a productive and enjoyable retreat where we can all make progress on our writing projects while building a strong and supportive community.
